High 12.7 Percent Youth Unemployment Rate for July – Take Action by Calling the White House Now!

Call the White House

Call the White House at (202) 456-1414 and tell President Obama to get out of the way of job creation!

The most recent unemployment numbers from the U.S. Department of Labor tell the story of suffering for millions of Americans, as the unemployment rate inched up to 8.3 percent for the month of July. This is now the 42nd consecutive month with unemployment above 8 percent.

To make matters worse, the non-seasonally adjusted (NSA) youth unemployment rate for 18-29 year olds is now at 12.7 percent for the month of July. Breaking that number down even further, one finds these startling numbers:

  • The youth unemployment rate for 18-29 year old African-Americans is 22.3 percent (NSA).
  • The youth unemployment rate for 18-29 year old Hispanics is 14 percent (NSA).
  • The youth unemployment rate for 18-29 year old women is 12.6 percent (NSA).

Furthermore, the declining labor force participation rate has created an additional 1.715 million young adults that are not counted as “unemployed” by the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) because they are not in the labor force, meaning that those young people have given up looking for work due to the lack of jobs. If the labor force participation rate were factored into the 18-29 youth unemployment calculation, the actual 18-29 unemployment rate would rise to 16.7 percent!

The latest unemployment number continues the devastating, and often underreported, story of how unemployment impacts young Americans through delayed dreams and careers. Instead of aggressively embracing policies that liberate businesses to create more jobs, the President and his appointees have pursued an agenda that suffocates economic opportunity under the weight of more spending, higher debt, more regulations, and higher taxes.

Millennials deserve better from their government. Yet, each day they awake to an economic reality that includes record high unemployment and limited opportunities. Their message to government officials and candidates is clear: we want to get on with our lives and realize our dreams. However, if the solutions you offer equal less jobs and more debt for our country, you will fail to win our enthusiasm and our vote.

So call the White House now and demand change! Let’s GO!
